A Look Into J.I.D.’s New Music and How Mac Miller Helped Produce It

On September 19th, Georgia native rapper J.I.D. released his new single ‘151 Rum’: the first track off of his soon to be released second album, DiCaprio 2, which a  release date has yet to be announced for. The release of ‘151 Rum’ marks the rapper’s first solo work to be debuted since he dropped his first studio album, The Never Story, in March of 2017.

‘151 Rum’ is the first single off of the rising artist’s second album, that is due to be released soon. However as the album serves as a follow up to The Never Story, it also serves as a reminder of Mac Miller’s presence in rap culture. J.I.D was set to accompany the late Miller on his upcoming Swimming tour this fall. According to J.I.D., Miller helped tremendously with the post-production of DiCaprio2. J.I.D. also claims that Miller was instrumental in the organizing of the album as well. From J.I.D.’s statement via Instagram about the album, it’s evident that Miller was a huge influence to J.I.D. and truly helped develop him into the artist he’s becoming.

‘151 Rum’ continues to stand testament to the rapping skills that the 27-year-old rapper posses. On the track, J.I.D. demonstrates that he did not lose his touch for telling stories in a condense, and fast-paced way. ‘151 Rum’ is a little more than two and a half minutes, but the song still manages to tell a comprehensive story of danger, loss, and escaping death.

Part of the reason J.I.D. can execute telling a story so intricate in such a brief period of time is due in part to the unbelievable rate at which he raps. Second after second, J.I.D. manages to spit out lyrics that he has not only masterfully arranged into complex rhyme schemes, but he also raps these words at speeds that are so fast paced that it’s difficult to believe that he has the raw ability to perform like that. What adds another layer to J.I.D.’s talent for speed is that despite the pace he is rapping at, he never sacrifices his enunciation and gives into being a ‘mumble rapper’. Throughout any of his songs, not just ‘151 Rum’, J.I.D. maintains speed and accuracy that are hard to encounter in rap culture today.

The cover art for the single is one that almost replicates a movie poster- which is J.I.D.’s intention. To him, each song off the yet to be released album, ‘feels like an individual film’.

As for what is to be expected from DiCaprio2, the artist has informed his fans that the project turned into something he never intended it to, and that it will be very different from The Never Story.

J.I.D. has once again proved himself as one of the most important up and coming rap artists to be watching in the future. His gift for storytelling, as well as his natural talents of rapping, set him aside from most other rap artists today. DiCaprio2 should be a big turning point in the young rapper’s ever developing career.
