Anna Moon Talks Us Through Her Single “Tightrope”

October 26, 20195 min read

It’s been a long time since I’ve heard a voice like Anna Moon’s grace the many playlists on my cellphone. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything quite like it – many would compare her to the likes of Amy Winehouse, and while there are convincing similarities between the two, Anna Moon is noticeably different. For one, her lyricism is witty and fun, and her song production channels the best of modern pop, just like the Gemini that she is. She may not be Amy Winehouse, but she’s Anna Moon – and that’s pretty great, too.

To celebrate the release of her single “Tightrope”, I was lucky enough to sit down and have Anna answer some of my questions.

I have so much to say about “Tightrope”, but I’ll start with the fact that in the song, your voice is so pleasurably unique that I totally didn’t expect it at all. When/how did you learn to sing (or were you just a natural from a young age)?

Singing has always been a part of my language. Even from an early age, I remember belting out loud around the house. I began to take it more seriously after attending a musical theater camp one summer and realizing how much fun it was to sing in front of an audience.

Do you write your own music and/or lyrics?

Yes, I write all of my own songs with my husband Niko Moon and producer Jamie Kenney. I couldn’t imagine not being a part of the process. It’s so much fun!

Secondly, “Tightrope” is riddled with important lyrics about liberating yourself from a toxic relationship. What inspired you to write a song like that? Did you draw any inspiration from your own life?

Definitely! I think we’ve all had toxic relationships in our life, romantic or platonic. It was important for me to write this – though distancing yourself from those situations can be extremely difficult, sometimes it’s necessary. I just truly believe life is so short, and your happiness is something you should never compromise.

I’ve been listening to “Tightrope” consistently for the last few weeks, and it’s a very feel-good, dance-around-your-room type of song. What type of sound can we expect from your discography in the future?

You can always expect my music to have an underlying jazz tone, with beats that hit. As far as what type of songs will come out of that, you will just have to wait and see! 🙂

Do you have any new music coming out soon?

YESSS!!! I have so much fun stuff in the pipeline!

What are your favorite pastimes?

Does shopping count? Haha!

How do you relax?

My favorite way to relax is binge-watching Netflix with my hubby.

Do you play any musical instruments?

I do! I can play guitar and ukulele. I want to learn piano next!

At what point in your life did you know that you wanted to become a musician?

I knew I wanted to become a musician after getting a taste for the stage and what it meant to perform. The rush, the lights, it struck me and still hasn’t let go!

Do you have any advice for our Affinity readers that are just dabbling in music at the moment?

The best advice that I can give to anyone is, find your own lane. Create music that is so authentically you, that there is no comparison to anyone else. In a world so saturated with unbelievable talent, you have to be more than just a good singer. Have your own vision and be relentless in your pursuit!

Yasti Ranjith

Way too curious for her own good and obsessed with tea, good TV shows, mystery novels and cupcakes. If you want to find Yasti, she's probably holed up in her room trying to be productive.
