Broadway Celebrates 2 Showbiz Veterans’ Birthdays!

On this day in 1930…..then again in 1948, broadway legends were born. Bringing the world Into The Woods and West Side Story, Stephen Sondheim celebrates his 87th birthday while Andrew Lloyd Webber (Phantom of the Opera, Cats) celebrates his 69th! Both composers are credited with some of Broadway’s biggest hits of all time.

Andrew Llloyd Webber is a wold famous composer having created musical theatre classics ranging from operatic scores to rock-musicals. Ever since 1968 with his first hit Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, ALW has been a household name for broadway lovers. Bringing us School of Rock and Evita, he has composed multiple Tony-nominated musicals and the 2 longest running shows in broadway history (Phantom of the Opera and Cats). Andrew has previously won 4 Grammys (2 Best Musical Theater album, Best Contemporary Composition, and the “Legend” award), been nominated for 14 Tony awards, 11 being Best Original Score (winning 3), 2 for Best Book of a Musical, 1 for Best musical. He has also won an Academy Award (Best Original Song) for the ballad “You Must Love Me”, from outstanding musical Evita, and received a Kennedy Center Honor.

Stephen Sondheim is a renowned broadway composer having written music for many amazing broadway musicals for more than 50 years, having been often called “America’s most influential contemporary theatre composer”! With his first and likely most famous attribute being West Side Story, he has since written music and lyrics for 18 musicals, including Gypsy, Company, and A Little Night Music. Additionally, Stephen has won 8 Grammy awards (7 for Best Cast Album, 1 for Song of the Year) and 8 Tony awards including “Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement”. He has also received The Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded to him by Barack Obama and like Lloyd Webber, a Kennedy Center Honor!

For many years, Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber have composed outstanding music for classic broadway shows, helping form and inspire modern musical theater. Happy birthday to these legends!
