BTS’s ‘Love Yourself: Answer’ Takes No. 1 on Billboard 200

Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’  takes on No. 1 in the Billboard 200, which marks BTS’s second leading chart album since Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear‘, which was released in May of this year.

Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer‘ is the third Korean-language compilation album of the Love Yourself series by South Korean boy band BTS that was released August 24, 2018. In its first week, its totals in both overall units earned and traditional album sales gave both BTS and K-pop their biggest week ever. The previous record also belong to BTS, with their Love Yourself: Tear album, which sold 135,000 units.

So the K-pop sensation not only broke the sales record once with Tear, but broke their own record with Answer, which, according to Nielson Music, earned 185,000 equivalent album units in the week ending August 30, 141,000 of which were in traditional album sales.  Talk about legendary.

Along with breaking their own record, Answer has followed Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods (293,000 units) and Ariana Grande’s Sweetener (231,000 units) as the third-largest units earned in a week of 2018 for a pop album.

This all makes BTS the first pop act since 2014 with two no. 1 albums in less than a year with Tear and Answer. The last time that happened was with Once Direction, who topped the list with Midnight Memories on Dec. 14, 2013 followed by Four on Dec. 6, 2014.

BTS is also the first foreign-language artist to achieve multiple #1 albums on the Billboard 200 in the same calendar year!

According to Billboard themselves: “The Billboard 200 ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multimetric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (equating 10 sold tracks to 1 album unit), and streaming equivalent albums.”

Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’  contains several previously released tracks from their fifth mini-album Love Yourself: ‘Her’ and third studio album Love Yourself: ‘Tear’, as well as seven new tracks.

The album’s first single “IDOL” charted at number 21 on the official chart – 21 spots higher than Fake Love, which reached number 42 in May. Its music video also achieved the biggest 24-hour debut on Youtube in history. How “IDOL” has done on the Billboard Hot 100 chart will be released on Sep. 5, 2018.

On Aug. 30, 2018 BTS attended the 2018 Soribada Best K-Music Awards where they received three awards in total —  Daesang (the grand prize), Bongsang (main prize) and the World Social Artist award.

The band is currently on the road for their Love Yourself world tour which began on August 25, 2018 in Seoul, South Korea. They are set to visit 8 countries, including Japan, United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands and Germany. However, there are more dates to be announced.

And although the band has already achieved great things throughout this month, there still remains more to come. One event fans are particularly anticipating is the attendance of BTS at the Grammy Museum on Sep. 11, 2018, where the band will perform and have an exclusive conversation moderated by Scott Goldman, the museum’s artistic director. Once again, talk about legendary.
