Charlotte Lawrence Releases Sultry Track ‘Why Do You Love Me’

Fresh off the heels of a worldwide tour and a ten-month hiatus from releasing music, rising pop star Charlotte Lawrence has released a new song “Why Do You Love Me'” co-written by her boyfriend Charlie Puth among other composers such as Ryan Tedder.

The 19-year-old star has a knack for writing pop tracks that have a dark undertone and her latest single is no different. “Why Do You Love Me” depicts a heartbreaking story of young love that is tainted by insecurity and teen angst, in the song Charlotte questions the motives of her partner singing “what is wrong with you, to want to be with me.”

The music video, directed by Alasdair McLellan, is equally as tumultuous. In the video Charlotte can be seen riding her bike through a suburban neighbourhood. The video switches up between shots of her fiery relationship with her on screen co-star and model Lucky Blue Smith who’s car she blows up after a string of confrontations. The song sends a powerful message of female empowerment and is definitely one of our new girl power anthems.

This isn’t the first time the singer has addressed the dark side to love and relationships as her catalogue is full of heartfelt, honest tracks that describe the harsh realities to love.

In ‘”Sleep-Talking” she describes her disdain towards her cheating lover who has been saying the name of his lover in his sleep, whilst in “Keep Me Up” she talks about her experience with anxiety and how it has impacted her life. Speaking to The Line of Best Fit she said:

“If I have an anxiety attack, I’ll pick up my guitar and I’ll start writing and it will calm me down. Even to talk about it out loud gives me a sense of relief. Through writing “Keep Me Up”, it helped heal me. It helped get that feeling out.

“It’s not my duty, per se, but I feel a responsibility because I understand what a lot of people are going through – so many more people than I ever thought. I want to be like, ‘look, I feel it too. This is what helps me. Maybe this can help you, and you can relate to this.’ I was able to find something that heals me, so I hope that other people can find their saving grace with that.”

Making songs that reflect her real-life experience has always been her number one priority. Speaking to Hypebae she spoke about what makes a good pop song: “meaningful lyrics and authenticity make any song good in my opinion. Lyrics are always what I listen to and grasp first before anything, no matter the genre.”

Growing up in L.A. and having parents that are pretty big in the world of showbiz (her dad created the 2000’s medical series Scrubs) it makes sense that the teen would have a matured outlook on life.

“Los Angeles is a land of artists, and growing up here gave me the opportunity to express myself creatively in any way I wanted. I believe that every city has negative parts to it because the negative people living there are what makes it shirtty, so as long as you have a good head on your shoulders and can decipher between right and wrong, good and bad, you’ll be good.”

Despite being in the early stages of her career, the L.A. native has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with in the pop industry, and if her tours are any indication of her future success, it would seem that the singer is set for stardom.

Over the past year, she has played a succession of sold-out shows across the world and built up a dedicated fan base. It is evident that Charlotte is going to become a household name and we can’t wait to see it happen!
