After months of rumors and anticipation, Harry Styles has finally confirmed the release of his first solo single. The track is called “Sign of the Times” and will be available to the public on April 7th, 2017.
While ex-bandmate Zayn Malik took to a less family-friendly and more R&B influenced sound on his first solo album Mind of Mine and Niall Horan released an acoustic ballad entitled “This Town,” it’s hard to predict what Styles’ new song will sound like, which is part of the excitement regarding the announcement. It seems like Styles has distanced himself from the music industry recently to pursue other projects, such as his involvement in Christopher Nolan’s latest war film Dunkirk and modeling for the men’s fashion magazine Another Man. The announcement of his new single proves that Styles will now be heading back to his music roots, and hopefully an album will follow.
Styles delivered the good news this morning via social media, posting a picture of the cover art for his single; his silhouette in the ocean surrounded by an orange-red sky. His caption stated the name of the song and the date for its release, and immediately took the internet by storm.
Interestingly, there is a theory flying around that “Sign of the Times” may be an ode to Prince. The announcement of the new Styles song is coincidentally on the same day as the 30 year anniversary of Prince’s Sign O’ The Times. Coincidence or not, it will be exciting to hear what Styles has in store.
If you’re a diehard One Direction fan and one single from Styles simply isn’t enough for you, never fear. Styles will also be performing “Sign of the Times” on Saturday Night Live on April 15th, the week after it’s released. On SNL performers typically play two songs, so will this be the debut of a second single? We’ll just have to wait and see.
After a long hiatus, it’s great to see Harry Styles making a comeback to music. Keep an eye and an ear out on April 7th for his new single, “Sign of the Times.”
