Hoodie Allen’s Song “Come Around” Analysis & Review

Hoodie Allen (his stage name) is a rapper, singer, and songwriter hailing from the suburb of New York City/Long Island, Plainview, New York. He attended the highly prestigious Ivy League University of Pennsylvania (Penn)’s Wharton School with a marketing and finance degree, toured at different colleges, and ultimately began to pursue music full time, quitting his job as an account exec at the tech giant Google. After the release of his debut EP in 2012, he hasn’t slowed down. In June of 2019, Hoodie announced the commencement of a new era with his upcoming “Whatever USA,” which will be the latest album release of his since his album “The Hype” which was released in 2017 and is currently entangled in copyright battles (leaving it removed from digital music streaming platforms). Hoodie wiped his Instagram and announced his latest song “Come Around,” a collaboration with Christian French.

“Come Around” opens with the soft strumming of guitar and Christian French’s voice, muffled in a way that makes the music sound like it’s coming out of an old radio, maybe in a vintage car. Christian’s voice fades into the background and Hoodie Allen’s rapping begins with light snapping and strumming behind it. Hoodie sings about caving in to an unhealthy relationship, the beat picks up on the phrase, “moves on” and Christian French’s voice is reintroduced.

The chorus begins and Christian sings about the freedom of riding in a car with the top down, followed by the refusal to allow someone who left him heartbroken, back into his life. He sings, “We were so free, ridin’ with the top down/Now I’m lonely, fading to the background/It’s too late for you to come around/It’s too late to come around/Said you love me, what you doin’ that for?/Now you’re slowly creepin’ through the back door/It’s too late for you to come around/It’s too late to come around.”

The next verse begins and Hoodie raps about a similar situation where a girl neglected to appreciate the situation, teasing, “She call me Tom Brady, bought that girl like six rings.” He insists that he’s done with her and that he’s moving on, rapping, “Honey keep your distance I’m done with all that fake shit you been dishin’.” He admits that they had good times, but he’s ready “to find someone to live with.”

Christian sings about once living life at a rapid and somewhat dangerous pace. Christian sings about now relaxing safely in the backseat of life, singing, “It’s like it ain’t the same no more/Used to ride the fast lane, shotgun/Now I’m in the backseat, caught up.” This ties in the car theme used in the beginning of the song, the promotional material, the music video, and the license plate cover art (similar to Hoodie’s last single from February, “No Going Back”).

“Come Around” is the song of the summer. More than that, it’s full of declarations of freedom, something on which Hoodie Allen has long focused, even saying, “I don’t want to just sign my life over,” in an interview he gave during his departure from his job at Google. He has avoided signing to a record label, even discussing on a podcast in 2017 how he has been approached to sign but wants to retain the integrity and freedom of his music. “Come Around” plays off of this freedom expertly. It’s full of guitar, playful lyrics, and sunshine. “Come Around” is the exact song you want to listen to while riding around with your friends on a warm summer day.
