She’s expecting a baby girl, but in a heartbreaking video, the PLL star has opened up about the child she lost.
Shay Mitchell broke the internet a few weeks ago when she made the shock announcement on her Youtube channel that her and boyfriend Matte Babel were expecting their first child, and now she is opening up about the miscarriage they suffered last year.
For fans this is a rare insight into her life as she has always kept her private life separate from her professional career. ‘Matte and I started quietly dating about three years ago,’ the 32-year-old explains as the episode opens. ‘I guess you could say we’re best friends now.’
In a new YouTube video titled “Keeping a Secret,” Shay explains that the miscarriage is why she chose to wait six months before announcing her recent pregnancy.
“I chose to hold on until I announced because of the first time,” she says. “It didn’t go as I had hoped for, and it was extremely difficult. The first time that I was pregnant last year, Matte and I hadn’t been planning, it happened and we were really excited about it. I was like 14 weeks, at that point I had no idea the percentage of miscarriages. When it happened I was just completely blindsided by it.”
Sadly 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, however there is still a stigma around the issue which means that for a lot of women, there is a lack of awareness with just how common they really are.
During the video, Shay explained that her previous loss had led her to having mixed emotions about her pregnancy.
“So of course I’m super happy, but I still feel for the one that I lost,” she continues. “I know other women and other friends of mine who’ve gone through a way harder journey. It’s just really tough because you feel broken, as a woman, and that’s not a great feeling.”
Fans first heard about the PLL star’s miscarriage on New Year’s Day when she shared an Instagram story which summarised her year. She wrote:
“The support and affection that so many of you show me lifts me up during even my darkest days, one of which happened last year after I miscarried and lost the child of my hopes and dreams.”
This couldn’t have been easy for Shay, so let’s send her all the support she may need.
