When I first heard that Naomi Watts was starring in an original Netflix series, I wasn’t immediately hooked. However, when more details of the show were released (specifically that Naomi’s character may have a mysterious female love interest), I became thrilled to watch.

Being in desperate need of more LGBTQ+ representation on my TV, I immediately added it to my not-so-metaphorical calendar of television shows and began the countdown to the show’s premiere.
The show is a 10-episode season, with all episodes available for streaming on Netflix as of June 30th. The show’s protagonist is a therapist named Jean Holloway (Watts) who is a mom and is married to Michael Holloway (Billy Crudup). At first glance, Jean is a regular mom who occasionally drinks a bit too much wine and wants nothing but the best for her family. However, being aware of the show’s synopsis (“therapist Jean Holloway becomes too immersed in the lives of her patients”), I had a feeling that things were going to get really intimate, and I wasn’t wrong.

Gypsy is a psychosexual slow-boiling drama with just enough sexual tension and emotional angst to keep you glued to the screen from episode to episode. It breaks barriers of the usual psycho-thrillers and introduces you to a new pace of drama. The scenes really make you pay attention to every bit of dialogue and hang on to every nuance and movement between the characters on screen. Each episode intensifies with new double-lives, lies, and affairs. You’ll never look at your local suburbia the same.
I’m not saying you should drop what you’re doing and binge-watch Gypsy right now, but in light of Netflix’s sudden hurdling of cancellations, you should definitely drop what you’re doing and binge-watch Gypsy right now.
I’ll leave you with a quote from the show’s creator, Lisa Rubin, on her thought process of creating Gypsy: “I really like the idea of forbidden lines and what that means. I had been thinking about therapists and the power that they have by knowing these intimate details about their patients.” (Source)
