A week after its release, I finally had time to see the new Kingsman film, directed by Matthew Vaughn, and produced by global film company ‘20th Century Fox’. Kingsman: The Golden Circle is, without a doubt, one of the best films I have ever seen; the way it elegantly blends so many genres makes it one to remember.
The first film Kingman: The Secret Service brought audiences laughter, shock, and sadness, all while taking us on a worldwide adventure. The sequel does just that—but better. I won’t spoil anything but the female antagonist, Poppy, is quite a unique villain. She shocks the audience with gruesome surprises and horrors, making us squirm and cry at the same time. Her plan to the rule the world with her drug industry is commendable, but obviously, the Kingsmen are there to save us from the panic.
The stars (of which there are many) gave excellent performances, topping the first film in my opinion. The cast is incredible: Taron Egerton, Edward Holcroft, Channing Tatum, Colin Firth, Halle Berry, Mark Strong, and Julianne Moore all delivered outstanding (and sometimes wacky) performances. Even Elton John has a few cameos! The talent of the actors creates such a convincing and realistic film, despite the surreal, taking-over-the-world theme.
The audience fell in love with Taron Egerton (Eggsy) in the first movie and definitely continued to stay in love with him in this sequel. I love the fact that despite being an official Kingsman serviceman, he still stays true to his ‘endz’. While a lot of his clumsy growing and learning was kept to the first film, he does continue to develop as a Kingsman, always trying to improve. His frequent cussing paints him as a relatable character, which is obviously ironic because it’s pretty atypical to be tasked with saving the world.
The filming techniques were phenomenal—Matthew Vaughn definitely knows what he is doing! My favorite shots, as I’m sure many of you can agree, are the action scenes. The use of contrapuntal sound (an ironic contrast between the sound/music and images onscreen) is a pretty iconic characteristic of the sequel and original film. Towards the end, an action-packed scene is paired up with “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” by Elton John, which is quite an upbeat, happy song. It is the opposite of what you would expect and you surely be laughing at the juxtaposition.
Overall, this film has gained a lot of success, and I would highly recommend you go out and see it soon! It is a hilarious, emotional, and action-packed gem and you would be doing yourself a disservice to not watch it as soon as you can. Check out the trailer below and book tickets now! You don’t want to miss out!
