The Golden Globe Awards is a ceremony to recognize the excellence in film and television. You would think this is a wonderful ceremony to recognize talented men and women. However, it’s not. The Golden Globe Awards 2018 nominations for Best Director were Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water; Martin McDonagh, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Christopher Nolan, Dunkirk; Ridley Scott, All The Money in the World; and Steven Spielberg, The Post. Spot any women for nominees for director? No, right? Only five men are nominated.
There are many empowering and talented women who deserve to be nominated for the best director, such as Patty Jenkins for Wonder Woman, Dee Rees for MudBound, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird, etc. However, none of them got nominated. Both men and women are “equal” in our society, but women are still disregarded.
Some people may think, it’s probably because the other nominees deserved it more, however, all the director nominees are male, and it shows this is a male-dominated awards show — women have received less recognition once again. The Lady Bird film that Greta Gerwig directed won Best Film from the New York Film Critics Circle, and The Beguiled, directed by Sofia Coppola, won Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival. This shows they deserve to be nominated as well.
This wasn’t the first time the Golden Globe Awards has done this. Babra Streisand was the only woman in the 74-year history of the Golden Globe Awards to win a Best Director award. Which certainly shows how male-dominated the Hollywood Industry is.
The Golden Globes Award show isn’t the only thing that disregards talented women — the sexual harassment in Hollywood proves this. Male domination needs to stop within Hollywood as well as outside of it. Every gender, as well as every race, deserves equal recognition.
