The ‘Pose’ Series Will Feature the Largest Transgender Cast Ever on American TV

December 29, 20173 min read

Ryan Murphy has had constant success on FX with shows like Glee, American Horror Story, Scream Queens, Feud and American Crime Story. Murphy will be trying his hand once again in a dance musical drama titled Pose. Murphy told Variety that Pose will feature “the most trans series regular actors ever in an American television production,” as well as “50-plus LGBTQ characters- a record in American television history.”

Set in the 1980s, Pose looks at the juxtaposition of several segments of life and society in New York; the rise of luxury Trump-era universe, the downtown social and literary scene and the ball culture world while simultaneously emphasizing the LGBTQ community.

According to Huffington Post, FX has hired transgender directors through Murphy’s Half Foundation, a mentorship program and hiring initiative founded last year to give opportunities in film and television to people of color, women and LGBTQ people.

Murphy created Pose with Dead Summer writer Steven Canals, Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and Brad Falchuck who will all executive produce as well. Janet Mock, a Transgender rights activist and bestselling author, will also be producing alongside Transparent writer and producer Our Lady J. Leiomy Maldonado (also known as the “Wonder Woman of Vogue”) and Danielle Polanco will be choreographing the series’ ball scenes.

FX conducted a nationwide search for transgender actors for the production. Those cast are Indya Moore, Dominique Jackson, Hailie Sahar, Angelica Ross and M.J. Rodriguez who will all be playing transgender characters. Also cast are Dyllon Burnside, Ryan Jamaal Swain and Billy Porter.

Once again Ryan Murphy has created a script that included fresh new actors who are leading a path towards diversity on television. He has also continued to give gifted people a chance at the spotlight behind the scenes. Pose, which is set to debut some time in the summer of 2018, is sure to combine emotional and inspirational stories and bring them to life.

“We are thrilled that Pose pushes the narrative forward by centering on the unique and under-told experiences of trans women and gay people of color. Ryan has assembled a strong team of storytellers and innovators to collaborate on telling this important narrative. As a Bronx-bred queer writer of color, I’m honored to aid in ushering this groundbreaking show into homes.” –Steven Canals
