It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that Scott Derrickson would be directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Unfortunately, Derrickson announced last week on his official Twitter that he would no longer be directing this long-awaited sequel of Doctor Strange. He explained that he and Marvel have mutually parted ways due to creative differences, but he will still remain as an executive producer.
Marvel and I have mutually agreed to part ways on Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness due to creative differences. I am thankful for our collaboration and will remain on as EP.

Derrickson is known as the director of The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister and, of course, Doctor Strange. It was clear that when Marvel Studios announced the news of the sequel of Doctor Strange in SDCC, Scott was very excited to take the sequel in a different vibe, making it more gothic and horror like the original Doctor Strange comics.
In the SDCC panel, Derrickson also explained that he was going to make the first horror movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). As he announced that, fans were clearly very excited. When Derrickson dropped the news that he and Marvel would be parting ways, MCU fans were left shocked and disappointed.

Yet in the midst of the sadness of the MCU fans, DC fans join the conversation by teasing Derrickson to direct a DC movie.

The meaning behind “creative differences” is still unknown but some fans speculated that maybe Derrickson’s idea was “too scary” since the rating is PG-13, and Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige, didn’t want to scare the kids that will watch the movie.
I, personally, agree with the fans’ speculation about the “creative differences” since the Doctor Strange comics itself might be too scary for children but still, the “scariness” that Derrickson planned to bring to the movie is a great idea since it brings a new vibe to the MCU movies.

All and all, MCU fans are still very thankful for Derrickson’s amazing work on Doctor Strange. As for the new director for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, according to Variety, Marvel Studios is currently searching for a replacement. The film will also be starting production in May this year, and there is no news yet on if the shooting is delayed.
There is also no news yet on if there’s a change in the characters that will appear; at SDCC, it was announced that Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) would return. As for the release date, the movie is still scheduled to air on May 7th, 2021. Hopefully, whoever will replace Scott Derrickson as the director for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness can make the movie as impressive as the first movie or even better.
