Aamir Khan is the Leonardo Di Caprio of Bollywood. The multi-talented man has not only been a top actor since his debut in the 80s, but has also produced some of the best movies Bollywood has to offer. Straying from the typical boy-meets-girl stories many Bollywood movies portray, Aamir Khan brings unconventional topics into the light—from learning disabilities to women in wrestling. Any movie lover, South Asian or not, must see these Aamir Khan movies.
- 3 Idiots
I truly believe this is one of the best movies ever made. In fact, it was listed number one in my article, Bollywood Movies Everyone Needs to Watch. In 3 Idiots, Aamir Khan takes on the role of a happy-go-lucky, mischievous student that touches the hearts of many.
“This movie touches upon many sensitive subjects such as college student suicide, dowry, poverty, and parent expectations. Combined with witty humor, characters you just can’t help but love, and a beautiful ending, this movie is truly a masterpiece.”
3 Idiots excels in all aspects of a Bollywood movie: romance, casting and soundtrack. However, its unique plot and all too relatable topics are what makes this movie so memorable.
- Dangal
Khan’s more recent movie, Dangal, is a film about women in wrestling. More specifically, about the famous and successful athletes Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. Rather than taking on the role of the hero, Aamir Khan appears as the father of these female athletes. From his body transformation to his struct demeanor, Aamir Khan once again showcases his impressive acting abilities.
Dangal has broken record upon record from being the highest grossing Indian film worldwide to the 5th highest grossing Non-English film.
- PK
PK is one of the most unique movies produced by Bollywood. It breaks free from the boy-meets-girl storyline to … alien-meets-girl? The movie chronicles the tale of an alien who crashes on Earth and the pretty journalist he befriends. His adventures consist of his quest to return home and his search for the true meaning of religion.
PK was another massive hit of Aamir Khan’s and emerged as the highest grossing Indian film when it was first released. Now, it holds the title of the third highest grossing Indian film.
4. Taare Zameen Par
If 3 Idiots won’t make you cry, don’t worry—this movie definitely will. Aamir Khan takes the role of a vivacious new teacher at a boarding school. His caring and sympathetic personality allows him to connect with a child with dyslexia. This child is neglected and heartbroken but the teacher nurtures the child onto the path for success. Aamir Khan’s range of acting once again shines in this movie. He isn’t a hero in this movie, but rather a mentor.
- Lagaan
Lagaan touches on the topic that brings anger to almost every South Asian—British imperialism. Becasue the movie touches on so many topics, it’s difficult to explain the plot in just a couple sentences. There are hints of stories that shaped Indian identity and other stories of how demeaning and unfair British rule was. In this movie, Aamir Khan is a hero in regards to his love interest and hidden bravery. However, the unique setting and plot allow this seemingly ordinary hero appear extraordinary.
Aamir Khan wows the world time and time again with his productions and acting. If one is wary about Bollywood and unsure of where to begin, Aamir Khan’s movies are the most perfect way to fall in love with Bollywood.
