A Year Without Carrie Fisher: Remembering Her Through Her Words

December 27, 20173 min read

It’s hard to believe that today, Dec. 27, 2017, marks one year since the passing of actress, author and mental health advocate Carrie Fisher. Fisher was known for her work both behind and in front of the camera. Though she’s most famously associated with her role as Princess Leia and more recently Leia Organa in the Star Wars film universe, she’s additionally known for her other acting roles, as well as for her writing of memoirs, autobiographies and screenplays. While we have her various works to remember her by, we also have her inspiring, humorous and relatable words that will live on.

Here are some of her most memorable words for us to enjoy and smile at to remember and mourn the star on this day:

“The only exercise I get lately is running off at the mouth and jumping to conclusions…..” via Twitter

“Resentment is like drinking a poison and waiting for the other person to die.” via Wishful Drinking

“I basically consider myself street smart, unfortunately that street is Rodeo Drive.” Via Twitter

“I’m not really one of those actresses like Meryl Streep. Those actresses travel outside themselves and play characters. And I’m more of an archaeologist. I play what I am. I dig what I can. It’s a character that’s not too far from myself, except I don’t have any laser guns.” via Good Housekeeping

“If my life wasn’t funny, it would just be true, and that is unacceptable.” via Wishful Drinking

“I act like someone in a bomb shelter trying to raise everyone’s spirits.” via The Princess Diarist

“I feel I’m very sane about how crazy I am.” via Wishful Drinking

“Please stop debating about whether or not I aged well. Unfortunately, it hurts all three of my feelings. My body hasn’t aged as well as I have. Blow us.” via Twitter

“Everyone drives somebody crazy. I just have a bigger car.” via Time Out New York

“Sometimes you can only find Heaven by slowly backing away from Hell.” via Wishful Drinking

“The most important things in my life now are my mother, my daughter, my friends and my dog, Gary. He travels everywhere with me! I love that saying ‘make me become the person my animal thinks I am.’ If I am who Gary thinks I am, I’m fantastic!” via Good Housekeeping

“I’m not happy about being older, except what are the options?” via Rolling Stone

This is only a small handful of the wisdom, intellect, snark and humor that Fisher spoke in every interview, book and tweet. Looking back on these words and more, while feeling both happy and sad, is one of the greatest ways to remember the heroine and keep her in our hearts.
