Victoria Scott is the author of young adult fiction novels. She has published eight novels so far and has received a large readership for each of her books. Her latest novel, Violet Grenade, is set to be released on the 16th of May 2017. The book’s release will be covered by a live stream, which will allow fans to spend the day with Victoria. It is an exciting venture!
Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing the wonderful Victoria Scott. I got an inside scoop on the live stream and learned a lot about her writing process. Ever wanted to know what being an author is like? Well, here’s your chance!
I understand you’ll be live streaming your entire day on Instagram on May 16, which is the day your next book, Violet Grenade, comes out. Can you tell us about that?
Yes! I have no idea how this will shake out. I’ve noticed my followers really seem to like it when I go live, so I thought, “Why not show an entire day?” I’ve been asked several times in interviews and on panels what it feels like to see your book in a store for the first time, or what I do on a release day—now fans will get to see that in real time. And you know what? I think I’ll love having company along for the journey. You can join the stream by following me on Instagram.
Will there be anything you won’t film?
I do plan on taking a few short breaks and won’t show anything that’s blushworthy. But all the big moments, and several small ones, will be there for viewers to enjoy (or yawn at). You’ll have breakfast with me, and you will be there while I write and read and see my daughter off to school. You’ll get to see Violet Grenade in stores for the first time alongside me, and when I have calls with publishing people, you’ll be able to listen in on those. And when it’s time to celebrate with champagne and good food, you’ll have a seat at the table.
Speaking of the book, how did Violet Grenade come to exist?
The story started with the main character, Domino. I kept picturing this small, tattooed girl walking down the streets of Detroit wearing a bright blue wig. I knew she had a terrible secret, but at first, I couldn’t decide what that was. Then it hit me—the secret was, quite literally, in her head…in the form of a dangerous second personality. Once the second personality, Wilson, was born, the rest began to fill in.
How on earth did you create this eclectic character?
For Domino, I created a Q&A sheet. I asked her what she was most afraid of, and what she wanted most in the world. I asked who hurt her, who loved her, and where she was from. I mixed surface-level questions—What’s your favorite color?—with more in-depth ones—What are you most afraid someone will find out about you? These questions helped me understand her, and they helped develop important scenes.
Are you working on anything new to publish after Violet Grenade?
Sure am! I’m currently working on a new young adult novel that I can’t talk too much about quite yet, but I can say that readers who enjoy Violet Grenade will hopefully like this one as well. It will have suspense, romance, and dark undertones.
How does it feel to have so many readers who adore your work?
Ha! It feels fantastic! Readers are why I push through and finish books when it seems impossible to do so. Their encouragement is my lifeblood. That’s why I think we decided to live stream my release day. Because really, where would I be without you guys?!
Stick around if you want to read a little more about Violet Grenade.
Violet Grenade
DOMINO: A runaway with blood on her hands.
CAIN: A silent boy about to explode.
MADAM KARINA: A woman who demands obedience.
WILSON: The one who will destroy them all.
When Madam Karina finds Domino in an alleyway, she offers her a position at her girls’ home in secluded West Texas. With no alternatives and an agenda of her own, Domino accepts. It isn’t long before she is fighting her way up the ranks to gain the madam’s approval…and falling for Cain, the mysterious boy living in the basement.
But the madam has horrible secrets. So do the girls in the house. So does Cain. Escaping is harder than Domino expects, though, because the madam doesn’t like to lose inventory. But then, Madam Karina doesn’t know about the danger living inside Domino’s mind.
Madam Karina doesn’t know about Wilson.
My two cents…
Violet Grenade is an eclectic mix of romance, suspense and dark undertones, and the characters are entirely original and inspired.
Be warned, there are no stereotypes in Violet Grenade, so do not expect a normal story.Domino doesn’t conform to the widely accepted stereotype of a heroine. She wears
Domino doesn’t conform to the widely accepted stereotype of a heroine. She wears colourful wigs and heavy makeup, and she owns it. She’s not afraid of being different, but still does what she can to make it to the top. Domino has done bad things but still finds a way to be good.
Wilson is the voice in Domino’s head, quite literally! He is there to make sure that nobody hurts Domino, and if they do, he hurts them- badly. He is a big part of Domino’s past, and possibly the only reason she stayed sane. He consumed all the bad and let Domino live a life free of her past. And I strongly believe that Wilson is one of the most amazing characters ever penned within the genre.
Dark and gritty, the plot takes off faster than you’ll be prepared for, and it doesn’t stop. It’s a heart-stopping rollercoaster ride with perfect plot twists and brilliant characters. You don’t get a breather with this book.
Amidst the stress of exams and deadlines, I read this book in one sitting. If you pick up a copy, make sure you have a clear schedule and a bright light- you’ll be up all night reading.
