Ariana Grande told us back in April that she had no more tears left to cry, but with the recent breakup with her ex-boyfriend Pete Davidson, it seems that the singer wanted to make that fact even more clear through a new song.
The artist dropped her newest single “Thank u, next” on Saturday right before the newest episode of SNL could air on NBC. Given the clapback she served Davidson in a now-deleted tweet after he seemingly dissed their relationship in a recent SNL promo, her new track turned out to be a lot less shady than many had expected.
Throughout the song, Grande gives shout-outs to her exes–Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez, Davidson, and Mac Miller– stating their names and the ways in which they’ve helped her grow.
“One taught me love/ One taught me patience/ And one taught me pain/ Now, I’m so amazing/ I’ve loved and I’ve lost/ But that’s not what I see/ So, look what I got/ Look what you taught me.”
But the best part about the single is how–in forgoing the diss track– Grande creates a break-up anthem that’s ultimately a dedication to herself as well as a declaration of self-love. She celebrates her determination and the strength that’s carried her through heartbreaking events like the Manchester bombing and the death of her ex Mac Miller as well as the onslaught of misogynistic harassment she’s dealt with on social media.
“I met someone else/ We havin’ better discussions/ I know they say I move on too fast/ But this one gon’ last/ ‘Cause her name is Ari/ And I’m so good with that (So good with that)
“She taught me love (Love)/ She taught me patience (Patience)/And she handles pain (Pain)/That shit’s amazing (Yeah, she’s amazing)/I’ve loved and I’ve lost (Yeah, yeah)/But that’s not what I see (Yeah, yeah)/Just look what I’ve found (Yeah, yeah)/Ain’t no need for searching.”
Before she dropped “Thank u, next,” the singer announced on Twitter that the track’s title would also be the name of the album she’s been hinting at since she dropped her last album Sweetener.

Seeing as she’s become somewhat of a master at making lemonade from the lemons life keeps handing her, adding her special touch of sweetener in the form hit songs, we can’t wait to get a taste of her next album.
