(SPOILER ALERT)
Harry Potter fans will be excited to note that the release date for the second Fantastic Beasts film has finally been announced. The film will be released on Nov. 16, 2018, exactly a year from now, and will be titled Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. David Yates is set to return as the director.
Potter fans will be familiar with Grindelwald, as he was first mentioned in the Potter books as the big bad of Dumbledore’s time. He was expelled from Durmstrang for, among other things, performing twisted experiments. We all know of his catchphrase, “for the greater good” and his use of the Deathly Hallows as a symbol of sorts.
The first Fantastic Beasts film showed Grindelwald’s activities since the end of his friendship with Dumbledore. During this time, Grindelwald caused chaos and terror across the wizarding world, making his aim all too well known: to create a hierarchy that would allow wizards to dominate over the non-magic folk. At the end of the film, we saw that Grindelwald was caught, and then imprisoned by MACUSA, while he was disguised as an auror, Percival Graves.
According to sources such as Pottermore, we can expect to see Newt Scamander work with Dumbledore to capture Grindelwald, who has managed to escape MACUSA’s custody.
Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol and Dan Fogler will be reprising their roles as Newt Scamander, Tina Goldstein, Queenie Goldstein and Jacob Kowalski, respectively. New characters include Newt’s older brother, Theseus (Callum Turner) and the mysterious Leta Lestrange (Zoë Kravitz), who has so far only been seen in a picture carried around by Newt. Jude Law will be taking up the role of a young Dumbledore, and naturally, he will be subject to scrutiny from die-hard fans.
Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller) will be back, to the delight of many fans, although we can only speculate as to what condition he will be in. In the ensemble photo, featured on Pottermore, Credence can be seen seated next to a mysterious new character played by Claudia Kim.
According to Pottermore, we can expect to see familiar names such as Nicolas Flamel. Carmen Ejogo will be back as MACUSA’s President Seraphina Picquery.
Many fans will be excited to finally have the film feature Leta Lestrange, as she shares her last name with a popular Potter character, Death Eater Bellatrix Lestrange.
The film will be set in New York, Paris and London and is set to provide an amazing cinematic experience.
If the first film stands as reference, we’re in for a treat from Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. J.K. Rowling has continued to reel us into the wizarding world, and each time is as amazing as the last. I’m certain that we can expect to be blown away by this new installment to the Fantastic Beasts series. Beloved characters return, new characters emerge and the exciting adventure that encompasses Dumbledore’s fight against Grindelwald will be featured.
Excited is an understatement.
