Aidan Alexander, famously known for having acted in movies such as F*&% the Prom and A Cowgirl’s Story, kicked off his music career on September 19th, 2018 with his debut single “I Don’t Love You.”
“I Don’t Love You” is an alternative pop song with smooth beats and an airy, relaxing undertone that imitates that end of summer dreamy state of mind.
Though Aidan is known widely already as a result of both his acting career and his influential presence on social media — coming in at a total 1.1 million followers on Instagram and Twitter combined — he is definitely an up and coming musician to keep an eye on. In this interview, Alexander talks love songs, his upcoming EP — which is set to release later this year — favorite books, and his admiration for indie pop singer Lorde.
Let’s start with the obvious. Your debut song “I Don’t Love You” just came out and it’s super good. Where did you find the inspiration to write it?
Oh, thanks so much. Well you know I was just hearing all of these tracks on the radio that just seem like these hollow, empty love songs and I kind of wanted to play with the idea of “I don’t love you” and once I started playing with that title I really got to dive into it and it was really cool. I wrote it about someone I actually did love a lot so it was a really cool experience. I’m glad that it turned out the way it did.
“I Don’t Love You” has a really dreamy effect to it. Were there any specific musical influences that inspired that?
You know it’s funny because the music I listen to is very different than the music I release. I’m really inspired by Robyn and these artists that are so lyrically driven and say all these haunting, deep things over really light and fluffy upbeat tracks.
How would you describe the song process for “I Don’t Love You”? Would you say it was hard or did it come naturally?
Well I grew up writing poetry so that’s kind of how I tackled it. A lot of my writing starts as little sentences that I piece together in my notes then when I go into the studio I try and play with it and see where the words and the melodies don’t line up and where they do line up. It’s different every time.
You have an EP coming out soon. Can you talk about that?
I can’t say too much but I can say that a lot of it is not as upbeat as “I Don’t Love You.” But all of the songs are written completely by me so I’m really proud of that.
You are originally an actor. Where did the desire to write music come from?
I’ve been singing since I was little so I knew it was something I always wanted to do. With acting you’re kind of telling somebody else’s story whereas with music you can write your own and tell it yourself. I’ve always been really creative and knew that it was something I wanted to.
If you could have “I Don’t Love You” be on the soundtrack to any movie which would it be?
Definitely a rom-com. That would be really ironic.
When you aren’t acting what do you like to do?
I love going to the beach. I love traveling, too. I love to hang out with my friends. Outside of my music and acting I am completely as boring as it gets.
If you could describe your sound to someone who has never heard you, what would you describe it as?
I would say alternative pop. It isn’t as mainstream pop as Katy Perry or anything but it still has a lot of pop elements.
What’s your favorite song right now?
“Mariners Apartment Complex” by Lana Del Rey. It’s beautiful. I love it.
Are there any other secret talents you’re hiding?
I can pop my wrist on command … I’m also a really quick reader.
What’s your all time favorite book?
The Perks of Being A Wallflower. I love the formatting of it. I love that it’s composed like a diary — I think that’s super unique
If you could listen to one song for the rest of your life what would it be?
“Landslide” or “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac.
If you could collaborate with any musician who would that be?
Lorde. I love Lorde. I think she is the most talented lyricist of our generation and I would love to work with her — even if all I got to do was watch her write.
