YouTube sensation Elizabeth Chang, better known as Lizzy Sharer, has captured the hearts of countless viewers with her fun, down-to-earth personality. Lizzy, who has amassed three million subscribers and counting on the video-sharing platform, has been deemed “family-friendly” for viewers of all ages with her variety of videos ranging from comedy skits, vlogs and pranks — the latter being her forte and a fan favorite amongst viewers. With a combined following of half a million across Instagram and Twitter, Lizzy Sharer continues to climb the social chain, turning into a YouTube triumph.
I spoke to Lizzy Sharer about her growing success on YouTube and what it’s like to balance social media with the real world.
Kaycee Wilson: Numerous social media stars have admitted to finding it difficult to divide their time between their presence online and their personal life. Is this something you struggle with? If so, how do you deal with it?
Lizzy Sharer: Trying to find a healthy balance between my personal and work life is definitely something that I struggle with. So much of my work blends into my personal life. With technology, it’s a lot easier to stay connected to my business and my fans. I sometimes get lost in my work because it’s so fun and every day I wake up so grateful and in disbelief that this is my job. However, I do believe that balance is necessary to not get burnt out. In order to do so, I always make sure to take time for myself to help me relax.
The videos you create and upload are always extremely creative and so different from the norm. Where does the inspiration for your YouTube videos stem?
Thanks! I find that my creativity comes out when I tap into my inner childhood self. My target demographic are kids from the ages of 8-14, so I like to think about what I did for fun when I was that age. It’s amazing what I can accomplish now that I have the resources and amazing people who help me make those ideas come to life.
Your channel has been deemed “family-friendly” and perfect for viewers of all ages. When you upload, what sort of message are you hoping to get across to your viewers?
I want to inspire and empower all my viewers to see that life is fun and that they can do anything they put their mind to. I also want to share my love for creativity and put a smile on everyone’s faces.
If you could collaborate with any creator, who would it be?
That’s a good question! We’ve collaborated with some amazing creators in the past such as Faze Rug, Rebecca & Matt Zomolo, Chad & Vy and the Carl & Jinger family. There are so many awesome creators that I’d like to collaborate with that include Laura DIY, Zac Efron, and Jojo Siwa.
What would you say is the best prank you have ever pulled off?
I think the best prank I ever pulled off is putting an actual petting zoo in Carter’s [Lizzy’s boyfriend] backyard. Carter was asleep the whole time while we were setting up so he had no idea what was going on. We had so many animals which included a cow, alpacas, goats, chickens, rabbits and guinea pigs.
When you aren’t working on things related to YouTube, what else do you like to do in your free time?
I love to go to the dog park with my puppy, Milli! She’s a Havanese poodle and she’s one and a half years old. I also like to work out, whether it’s a spin class or yoga, I like to try different things. I also like to spend quality time with my family and friends but also making sure I get time alone to reflect and grow!
What is your advice for anyone who would like to start a fun and successful YouTube channel, such as your own?
First, you need to have a good idea of what kind of videos you want to post. Next step is coming up with a strategy on how you’ll capture and entertain your audience. Lastly, I think the most important thing is to have fun with it.
