5 Must-Read Comedic Books

November 10, 20174 min read

I like to read a lot — I’m always on the hunt to buy a new book — so whenever I get the chance, I do like to find books that were recommended to me by friends or watch videos to find new books.

I especially love books that make me laugh — the ones that are uplifting when I’m having a bad day. If you are a book connoisseur like myself, and you want a good chuckle to yourself, then here are five funny books that you should read if you haven’t already.

1. “Modern Romance” by Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari is one of my favorite people, and it took me a while to get my hands in this book. Modern Romance is about finding love in the age of technology — the 21st century. It’s humorous, and you can really hear some of Aziz’s comedy seeping out the pages. The book is also statistic-based, meaning there are a lot charts and data that gives us information on the topics he’s discussing. It also tells us what dating was like in other generations when people actually went outside and met new people. It’s overall an insightful and interesting book.

2. “So You Have Been Publicly Shamed” by Jon Ronson

I am currently reading this book, and I’m halfway through. The general gist of this book is the author exposing different people who have already been exposed publicly online, specifically on Twitter. It shows what they did, their responses and then the aftermath of being exposed. If you love satire and investigative journalism, you’ll really enjoy this book. Surprisingly, I found stories that I recognized and seen on Twitter or online.

3. “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (and Other Concerns)” by Mindy KalingI love Mindy Kaling; her character on The Office was literally the best character, in my opinion, and as a brown girl, I relate to her childhood. I grew up in the same way along with the same feelings. Her book is an autobiography, and it’s hilarious — you can hear her comedy in her words. It also talks about her growing up, working as a writer and includes pictures from her childhood and when she was on The Office.

4. “The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving a F**k” by Sarah KnightThe title tells you what the book is about — it tells you how to not give a f**k about things that are too often worried about. I remember there was even a chart on whether we should give a fuck or not. It’s witty and funny, because the way she talks about the different methods actually sounds like you can do it.

5. “Milk and Vine” by Adam Gasiewski

Unfortunately, Vine is dead, but this book allows us to reminisce the golden gems — those given to us on the app that practically made our whole generation. The book is a parody of the poetry book “Milk and Honey” by Rupi Kaur as it is formatted the same way inside like you would see in most poetry books. The book is actually even more funny when you can imagine the video in your head whilst reading.

Go forth to your nearby bookstore and pick up these books that will bring you joy!
