A big topic of 2016 was Camila Cabello’s departure from the X Factor-discovered group Fifth Harmony. Since then, Cabello has released solo tracks and collaborated with Shawn Mendes, Machine Gun Kelly, Young Thug, and Quavo to create major hits.
Since her split from the girl group, there has been major talk about her debut solo album. The songs she has released thus far have just been breadcrumbs, it seems, as Cabello has delivered a lot of news in one day. Not only has she named her album CAMILA, but dropped two new songs and the Jan. 12 release date for the full album.
Camila admits in her Instagram post that: “[…] i decided to call it by my name, because this is where this chapter in my life ended. it started with someone else’s story, it ended with me finding my way back to myself.” Cabello suggests a lot of meaningful tracks from the album, and her first two releases are no exception.
Real Friends, one of the two new releases, includes a slower tempo with heartfelt lyrics about broken friendships and misguided trust. Some may even consider calling it an acoustic track. It’s soft, something we haven’t seen from Cabello since I Have Questions, and captures the same hurt and sadness that we heard in the former.
Never Be the Same, however, is surrounded by longing, love and lust. Camila showcases her vocals in an interesting new way, and uses the calming beat to deliver the chorus. The song is slower than most of her other tracks, but still has her classic sound, and includes a lot of echoey, ethereal noise. It’s definitely got that vibe of being a song to drive to.
A lot of buzz has been spreading since the announcement, and I assume it will only grow as tracks are released and the album date grows closer. Camila has been responding to fans on her Twitter, just performed at Z100’s Jingle Ball, and will be performing on the highly anticipated Rockin’ Eve. Maybe she’ll be debuting some new songs in the meantime. Until then, we can just keep what we have on repeat.
