Spotlight On Greyson Chance — Child Star Turned Pop Sensation

February 1, 20194 min read

In 2010, Greyson Chance stole the hearts of millions across America when he appeared on The Ellen Show with his cover of Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi. Only twelve at the time, Oklahoma raised Chance captivated the world with his floppy hair and incredible piano skills. Since his appearance on Ellen, his cover of Paparazzi has garnered over 64 million views on YouTube as of January 2019. But, in terms of mainstream media, Greyson kind of disappeared from the public eye for a while.

In the almost nine years since he sang his way into our hearts, Greyson released his first (and only) full-length album in 2011, titled Hold On ’Til the Night, featuring songs “Unfriend You” and his hit single, “Waiting Outside the Lines”. The album was followed by two EPs, Waiting Outside the Lines and Truth Be Told part 1, in 2011 and 2012, respectively. After the release of these two EPs, we didn’t hear from Greyson for a while, besides the release of two singles in 2014 and 2015. However, the following year, he released his latest EP, titled Somewhere Over My Head. This EP featured singles “Hit & Run” and “Back On the Wall”, which came with a music video, his first since the release of “Sunshine & City Lights”, four years prior.

After the release of SOMH, Greyson revealed that he would be taking time off from music to go to college at the University of Tulsa, in his home state of Oklahoma. Nonetheless, he released a few songs at the end of 2018, including a version of “Hungry Eyes” for the Dirty Dancing television soundtrack. These releases were followed by the announcement of his second studio album, portraits, set to come out in early 2019, followed by a North American tour (which I’ll be covering come March 2019).

In addition to working on new music, Chance has also been making behind the scenes videos on his YouTube channel following the behind the scenes of his music videos, tour rehearsal and the making of his latest album, appropriately titled, portraits vlogs.

A lot of us were barely teens when Greyson first appeared on the music scene and grew up with him, listening and learning. Watching his growth from the twelve-year-old boy singing on Ellen to the nineteen-year-old coming out to the world, to now, Greyson Chance, the twenty-one-year-old who will be releasing his second album, has truly been an honour. If you haven’t listened to Greyson’s more recent music, its available on all streaming platforms including Spotify and Apple Music. Make sure to follow Greyson on Instagram and Twitter, and to keep an eye out for his new album, portraits, coming early 2019.
