Bollywood’s beloved Sridevi passed away on Saturday night at age 54 in Dubai. This was confirmed by her brother-in-law, Sanjay Kapoor.
Sanjay told Indian Express:
Yes, it is true that Sridevi passed away. I just landed here, I was in Dubai and now I am flying back to Dubai. It happened roughly around 11:00-11:30. I don’t know more details yet.
Earlier reports stated that the actress died following a massive cardiac arrest, however, the autopsy revealed that the Sridevi accidentally drowned in her hotel room bath tub. Her body was discovered by her husband, Boney Kapoor.
According to the Indian daily paper, Sridevi was in Dubai with her husband Boney Kapoor and her daughter Khushi at the time of her death. The extended Kapoor family had gone to Dubai to attend the wedding ceremony of her nephew, Mohit Marwah. Sridevi’s eldest daughter, Jahnvi, was not with the family at the time as she is currently shooting for her debut Bollywood film, Dhadak.
Sridevi began acting at the age of four when she was cast in the Tamil movie Thunaivan. Following several Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada films, Sridevi-born as Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan-made her debut as a child artiste in Bollywood in 1975’s Julie. She went on to enthrall the world as one of the first females in Bollywood to gain a superstar status, and her name is up there with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan and Rishi Kapoor. She spearheaded the unconscious revolution in Bollywood, in which female actresses became as revered as their male counterparts. Due to her iconic track record, she has inspired many actors and actresses. Her great talent and charisma earned her the Padma Shri award, the fourth highest civilian honor bestowed by the Indian government.
Her most notable films include Chandni, Nagina, Himmatwala, Mr. India and Chaalbaaz, as well as many others. After a 15 year break, following the 1997 film Judaai, Sridevi returned to Bollywood once more with the 2012 movie, English Vinglish. Her performance was praised, and most fans were incredibly elated to have their favorite Bollywood star back on the silver screen. Her last film was the critically acclaimed Mom, which had audiences reeling in 2017.
Sridevi married film producer Boney Kapoor, the brother of her most popular on-screen partner, Anil Kapoor. She had two daughters, Jahnvi and Khushi. Unfortunately, Sridevi will not see her eldest daughter’s Bollywood debut later this year.
Her death is an incredibly heavy blow to Bollywood fans, as many spent their childhoods watching Sridevi grace their movie screens. The hashtag #RIPSridevi is trending on Twitter, giving grieving fans an outlet to share their feelings. Indian actress Priyanka Chopra has already expressed her sadness over Sridevi’s death, and many others have done the same.
I have no words. Condolences to everyone who loved #Sridevi . A dark day . RIP
