Logic, a 27-year-old rapper just released a new music video for his latest hit single “1-800-273-8255” and has gained 3 million views just within 24 hours of its release. The creative rapper presents the story of a young teen boy struggling with his sexual identity and suicidal thoughts while growing up. The song, which also features Alessia Cara and Khalid, derives its name from the suicide prevention hotline, which helps people struggling with their suicidal thoughts while kept confidential.
The video starts off with the young boy (played by Coy Stewart) as a baby being raised by his parents and quickly fast-forwards to his high school years. One day when the boy returns home from school he finds his disapproving father (played by Don Cheadle) waiting for him and later on his friend’s disapproving dad that walks on the two sleeping together. Meanwhile, teammates are also bullying him for his sexuality. It’s clear in the video that he doesn’t get much support from anyone which makes it extremely hard for the boy to figure out who he is. Later on, the boy is found with a tough decision when he finds a gun in his home before he decides to get help.
Not many rappers today, or any artists alone address such topics including the LGBTQ community or suicide which is why it’s important to pay attention. According to the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, the song has caused the organization to receive the second highest call volume in history for the day. They also reported that the hotline number was Googled significantly on April 28th by more than 100%.
In mid-July, Logic tweeted out that “1-800-273-8255” was the “most important song I’ve ever wrote.”
