Star Wars Episode IX’s New Teaser Trailer Raises So Many Questions

April 13, 20194 min read

The long-awaited trailer and title reveal for Star Wars Episode IX has finally arrived. Despite being just a teaser trailer, this has left Star Wars fans with so many questions and high excitement for a movie that symbolizes the end of the Star Wars saga.

The Rise of Skywalker is the final and official title for what will most likely be the last movie of the Star Wars series,  directed by the one and only J.J Abrams. The teaser trailer opens with Rey (Daisy Ridley) breathing heavily as the LucasFilm logo appears slowly. She stands in a desert that seems to be either Jakku or possibly Tatooine with Anakin’s lightsaber on her belt as she looks far ahead of her. This part manages to give chills as Luke’s (Mark Hamill) voice narrating in the background. Then a TIE silencer that seems to belong to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) flies in high speed towards Rey.

The rest of the trailer is pretty emotional since Princess Leia’s theme song is used throughout the trailer to honor the late Carrie Fisher, who portrayed Leia. Scenes include Kylo fighting in a forest with a red light that manages to make his surroundings look eerier. Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) also finally appear in also a desert. Two beloved droids BB-8 and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) also make an appearance, but unfortunately, R2-D2 is nowhere to be seen.

This teaser trailer also has many surprises from the past Star Wars movie. Billie Dee Williams is back as Lando Calrissian! Since the passing of Han Solo, the Millennium Falcon falls back into Lando’s hands. Princess Leia also makes her last appearance with archive footage of Carrie Fisher. Another surprise that also one of the big questions that appear because of this teaser trailer is when Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) and the droids are looking at strange massive debris that looks like a huge part of the Death Star II! When Luke says, “No one’s ever really gone,” a very familiar evil laugh of Palpatine is heard right on cue.

It’s kind of frustrating of how vague the teaser was, but again, it’s only a teaser. The final trailer hopefully will answer some of our burning questions about this movie. The one that I’m super curious is the title: The Rise of Skywalker. Which Skywalker is the focus of the story? Is Kylo finally embracing his legacy as a Skywalker? Are we right this whole time about Rey being a Skywalker? If so, how come?

Another one of the questions is: does the laugh truly belong to Palpatine? Some of the fans think that it’s Mark Hamill who laughs. If it is Palpatine, then what does he got to do with this story? How does he come back from the dead? Did Vader even truly kill him? Was he even dead? Is Kylo going to follow him or fight him? Unfortunately, we have to wait until this movie air in December this year. In the meantime, all we can do is make theories about the movie and most definitely spread positivity about this movie.
