For the Broadway theatre scene in 2018, the year was filled with a number of new original and revival musicals. Some of the year’s biggest hits included, the stage adaptation of the movie Mean Girls as well as shows such as Head Over Heels and The Prom (now known for the first ever same-sex kiss during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade).
However the 2019 Broadway season looks equally as promising. Here are three of the best looking musicals, set to premiere on Broadway during the new year.
Ain’t Too Proud
Ain’t too Proud depicts the life and times of the original Temptations, now heralded as one of the “Greatest R&B groups of all time“. The musical follows each of the members of The Temptations on their journey to fame, maneuvering love, drugs and brotherhood. It is a jukebox musical including all of the group’s greatest hits such as “Papa was a Rolling Stone” and “My Girl”.
The show had its Pre-Broadway run in Toronto produced by Mirvish. I had the opportunity to watch it, and would highly recommend it to anyone. The music is fantastic, and the talent within the cast is absolutely incredible. You will leave the theatre with a newfound love for their music (if you haven’t got one already!) Ain’t too Proud is set to open on Broadway on March 21 2019.
Be More Chill
If you’re a real theatre-nerd, then you’ve probably already heard of Be More Chill. The musical has been Off-Broadway for some time, but is finally set to premiere this February at the Lyceum Theatre.
The show is based off of the novel by the same title, by Ned Vizzini (also known for YA book It’s Kind of a Funny Story). Be More Chill is based on the idea that there is a pill that will ensure a person is popular. The musical follows the trials and tribulations of this, as teenager Jeremy takes the pill in order to reinvent himself.
The show is already widely anticipated and loved, and it is certain that this will be a smash hit in 2019.
Moulin Rouge! The Musical
The Broadway adaptation of the 2001 movie-musical Moulin Rouge is set to premiere on Broadway in the Spring of 2019.
The cast for this musical looks particularly exciting, including stars Karen Olivo (In the Heights) and Aaron Tveit (Next to Normal). The musical focuses on the love affair between a composer and a cabaret dancer, featuring a wide variety of well-known pop songs.
These are just a few of the shows headed to Broadway for 2019. A more extensive list can be found at Playbill.com.
