The internet is currently OBSESSED with Noah Centineo, but I’m sure you already knew that. I mean, c’mon, with the thousands of posts, tweets, articles, videos, pictures, and edits about Noah Centineo flooding social media for the past month and a half, I’m convinced everyone has at least heard his name or seen his somehow perfectly messy brown hair. And I’ll admit, even I’m kinda obsessed with Noah Centineo. But what is it about him that has the internet this head-over-heels in love with him?
Over the past couple of years, I’ve witnessed the internet go crazy over plenty of guys from movies, some of the most popular being Timothée Chalamet and Tom Holland, but I’ve never seen anything like this before. Also, Noah Centineo didn’t just spontaneously appear out of nowhere once To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before came out. He’s been in plenty of popular films and televisions shows throughout the years, most notably The Fosters. He also was in Camilla Cabello’s music video for her hit song, “Havana” in 2017. So why did it take To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before for the internet to fall in love with Noah? Are we in love with Noah Centineo, his role of Peter Kavinsky, or the fantasy of it all?

I think the initial love and obsession with Noah Centineo started out as a fantasy for Peter Kavinsky after To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before premiered on Netflix this August. The role of Peter Kavinsky was swoon-worthy in that it added dimension and a heart of gold to the classic jock trope, as the jock is presented as a bully and a player in lots of teen films. However, Peter Kavinsky wore a letterman jacket, had a seat at the varsity athlete’s table, was shown to be a good person, and was loyal to both his ex and current girlfriend, following in the footsteps of iconic internet boyfriend and jock, Troy Bolton (who everyone was in love with and is still in love with.) He was a respectful and somewhat sensitive jock, which is a rare gem in teen movies. I feel like the internet thinks of Peter Kavinsky as the “perfect guy” being that in the movie he was hot, charming, aggressive (when he needed to be and in a good way), thoughtful, and he had the overly cute catchphrase of “woah woah woah.” When in reality, no boy or girl you meet will have every characteristic and personality trait you admire. I believe the internet fell in love with the idea of Noah Centineo being Peter Kavinsky. But obviously, unlike Peter Kavinsky, Noah isn’t fictional nor perfect, and there’s harm in failing to separate the actor from the character.

After To All The Boys I Loved Before premiered and the world became obsessed with Peter Kavinsky, Noah Centineo started doing YouTube interviews and press for sites like Buzzfeed and Seventeen magazine. Through reading tweets, answering questions from interviewers, playing games with his castmates, and cuddling with cute dogs — Noah Centineo debuted himself to the world as someone even better than fictional dream boy, Peter Kavinsky, because Noah himself was more real.
In these videos, Noah Centineo let the world in on who he was a person, which is a humble and down to earth guy. He opened up about his high school experience, and how he felt like he had to hide who he was, the opposite to the internet’s alter ego of Noah, Peter Kavinsky. He opened up about his philosophies on love and relationships and how he values independence in his partners. He showed the world how goofy he was, especially with his castmate Lana Condor (whom the internet ships with Noah.) He spoke so highly and honestly about his castmates and the movies he’s worked on, pushing the lessons and deeper meanings they presented. On his Instagram story, he frequently posts videos of himself listening to music in his car or hanging out with his friends. Though I don’t know Noah personally, I feel like his kindness and humbleness is genuine. Obviously, everyone has flaws and Noah isn’t perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I think that the honest reality of Noah Centineo is what solidified the internet’s love for him beyond the role of Peter Kavinsky.
With his increase of exposure in the film industry, we know that Noah will continue to land roles and remain in the spotlight. And who knows, maybe we will get a sequel to To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, so we can see more of Peter Kavinsky being the perfect boyfriend to Lara Jean. Regardless, I think it’s safe to say that the internet will continue to be obsessed with Noah Centineo. But I don’t think the infatuation will stop at him. There’s always going to be another break out star from a popular movie that’s going to steal our hearts with their boyish good looks and charming wit.
