Shadowhunters Season 3: What You Need To Know

February 20, 20186 min read

We are now exactly one month away from the premiere of the third season of Freeform’s Shadowhunters. Over the course of this very long hiatus, we have gotten tweets from the writers with some ambiguous hashtags, the occasional behind the scenes photos, some teasers and the official trailer. Here’s what you need to know before the premiere!

Clary and Jace

After watching Jace (Dominic Sherwood) die, killing Valentine herself, and reversing his wish to rid the world of Downworlders while bringing Jace back to life, Clary (Katherine McNamara) is already in a struggle. Not only does she have to hide their secret from everyone but she is noticing that Jace doesn’t seem to be the same guy he was before “dying”. In the trailer and other teasers, she confides in other people on her concern for Jace’s well being. He seems to be having nightmares in which there’s a chance he harms Clary. Another thing to keep in mind is that they will be in an actual relationship this season (like going on a mundane date), after two seasons of either flirting or thinking they’re related. According to other tweets by one of the showrunners, Todd Slavkin, Clary will be shown doing some more art and she will be drawing a new rune.

Isabelle Lightwood

We don’t know a lot about what is going on with Isabelle (Emeraude Toubia)  this season but there have been some bits and pieces given by the writers. In season 1, we saw her use her forensic pathologist skills and we will see them again, as well as other skills. She will the new weapons master, which makes so much sense, have you seen what she can do with that whip? After the events of last season with the Yin Fen and vampire blood addiction, she has a newfound respect for the mundanes she has met at her AA meetings. There are hints of her “falling in love”, opening her heart with the help of someone special.

Magnus & Alec

As individuals, both their leadership positions shift due to the decisions they had to make at the end of the previous season. There seems to be some rivalry between a new warlock in town, Lorenzo Rey (Javier Muñoz) and Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr), which may be a reason for this shift in power. As for Alec (Matthew Daddario), his storyline will continue to revolve around the Shadow World politics, his own family and his relationship with Magnus. There have been plenty of tweets from the showrunners and writers about different scenes between the two. There have been teases of a possible drunk Alec, the mortality/immortality talk, a training scene, and a lot more. On Valentine’s Day, there was a teaser released, titled “Malec’s Sacrifice”, which hint at a storyline that is very popular and heartbreaking from the Mortal Instruments’ series.

Simon Lewis & Maia Roberts

Simon (Alberto Rosende) had to make a difficult decision in order to save Maia’s (Alisha Wainwright) life last season. He will be struggling with having to be with the Seelie Queen (Lola Flanery & Sarah Hyland)  and she is going to do something to him that will have a major effect on him. Other than that, there has been some talk that Simon will be singing once again as well as getting saved by Izzy once again. As for Maia, we will be learning more about her backstory and where she’s originally from. Maia will be struggling with the idea of forgiveness. We don’t know a lot about their relationship as of right now.

Luke Garroway

There isn’t much information about Luke (Isaiah Mustafa), except his storyline with his partner Ollie (Alexandra Ordolis). Since in the finale, she discovered Hunter’s Moon and the fact that Luke is a werewolf with his own pack, he has to get her far away from the Shadow World as possible. He will have to use tough love to keep her from finding out more stuff and to keep her safe. There have been hints about Luke and a possible relationship with Maryse Lightwood (Nicola Correia Damude), but there’s not a lot of information on that yet.

The Big Baddie & Other Characters

Season three’s big bad is the mother of all demons, Lilith (Anna Hopkins). She will reign havoc in New York and do anything to protect her son, Jonathan Morgenstern (Will Tudor), who was severely injured (also supposedly dead) by Jace. There will be other characters introduced, such as Jordan Kyle (Chai Hansen) and Lorenzo Rey (Javier Muñoz). There will be returning characters such as Raphael Santiago (David Castro), Catarina Loss (Sophia Walker), Madzie (Ariana Williams), Aline Penhallow (Eileen Li), and Sister Cleophas (Lisa Berry).

Shadowhunters returns March 20th, 8:00 PM/EST, on Freeform.
