NBC made a bold move in late 2015 when they decided to launch a duo of sitcoms to air on Monday nights. The two shows, Telenovela and Superstore, were launched with little warning and were thought by many to fail miserably.
Telenovela, a Latino soap opera, was canceled when episode after episode resulted in incredibly low ratings.
Superstore, however, overcame the tricky Monday night slot, was renewed for a second season, and was then moved to a higher viewed and sought position: Thursday nights. Superstore moved to the beginning of NBC’s Thursday night primetime programming followed by Chicago Med, The Blacklist, and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Following a successful second season with high ratings, NBC’s Superstore was renewed for yet another season of twenty-two episodes, double its initial season composed of eleven episodes.
The show has been a learning curve for series creator and executive producer Justin Spitzer, who previously produced and served as a writer for seven years on another workplace comedy, the American version of the more desk-bound The Office.
Superstore is a kind of comedy that television has never seen. Superstore is a workplace comedy that is set in a very Walmart-esque big box store called Cloud 9, and the show revolves around the unique family of employees that work there. From the bright-eyed newbies and the seen-it-all veterans to the clueless summer hires and the in-it-for-life managers, together they hilariously tackle the day-to-day grind of rabid bargain hunters, riot-causing sales and nap-worthy training sessions.
In addition to creating an entirely new kind of comedy, the cast of Superstore is incredible. From the people playing the roles to the roles themselves, Superstore is complex and enticing.
The cast is composed of seven incredible actors, many of which are household names, and the roles they assume are as interesting as they are diverse. America Ferrera, an award-winning actress, plays Amelia “Amy” Dubanowski. Amy is a Honduran-American employee who has held various positions at Cloud 9. Throughout her eleven years of working there, she has worked as an associate, floor supervisor, assistant manager, and for a short period of time the primary store manager. Ben Feldman stars as Jonah Simms in the comedy as a young, optimistic, clumsy associate at Cloud 9 alongside Nico Santos, who plays gay Filipino Mateo Liwanag, an associate at Cloud 9 hired at the same time as Jonah. Actress Lauren Ash is vital to the scene as she plays a very serious and intense assistant store manager named Dina Fox. Colton Dunn stars as Garrett McNeil, who is paralyzed from the waist down and serves as the intercom announcer at Cloud 9, to which he adds a sarcastic and indifferent tone. Nichole Bloom plays Cheyenne Lee, who is an associate and a pregnant high school student. All characters serve under store manager and devout Christian Glenn Sturgis played by Mark McKinney.
The nominations and awards the show has received serve as evidence to how outstanding every aspect of Superstore is. The show has been recognized by the Imagen Awards, Casting Society of America, Gracie Awards, and has recently been nominated for TV Series Comedy and Best Comedy Actress (America Ferrera) at the Golden Nymph Awards.
