Brendon Urie Comes Out As Pansexual

July 9, 20183 min read

Lead singer and frontman of the band Panic! At The Disco, Brendon Urie, has officially come out as pansexual. In an interview with Paper Magazine, Urie openly discussed his sexuality and attraction to men.

In the interview, the American singer stated:

Yeah I guess you could qualify me as pansexual because I really don’t care. If a person is great, then a person is great. I just like good people, if your heart’s in the right place. I’m definitely attracted to men. It’s just people that I am attracted to.

Pansexuality, sometimes referred to as omnisexuality, is the attraction to a person regardless of their gender identity or biological sex. Pansexuality does not place any boundaries on who the person can be attracted to.

Although Urie is married to a woman, Sarah Orzechowski, this does not eliminate his attraction to all genders.

This is also not the first time his sexuality has fallen under the spotlight. Urie has been open about kissing his other male friends and even ex-band member Ryan Ross, who many fans speculated had a relationship with Urie.

Urie has never shied away from showing his support of the LGBTQ+ community. In 2013, Panic! At The Disco released a song called “girls/girls/boys” about girls being attracted to both men and women. In the song, Urie also states “love is not a choice,” dubbing the song as an LGBTQ+ anthem.

Most recently, Urie has joined with GLSEN (the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) to help establish Gay-Straight Alliance clubs in high schools all across the United States. Urie has also recently launched the Highest Hope Foundation with GLSEN, which aids non-profit organizations that advocate for human rights. Since the startup, Urie has donated $1 million to the foundation.

As a society, we are becoming more immune to the toxic tropes of femininity and masculinity. Pansexuality is becoming more familiar and normalized as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Many other celebrities such as Jazz Jennings, Angel Haze, Janelle Monae and Miley Cyrus are coming out as pansexual. With these celebrities openly expressing their sexuality, especially one that is less recognized or understood, more LGBTQ+ people will feel inspired to accept their own sexuality.

And hopefully, everyone else will gain a better understanding of what pansexuality is.
