Cardi B (real name Belcalis Almanzar) climbed her way to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, knocking Taylor Swift from the high spot. The former “Love and Hip Hop” star made “money moves” as her hit song “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves)” rose from No. 2 to No. 1 on the latest chart.
With her debut hit, Cardi B made history as the first solo female rapper to top the charts since Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” in November 1998. After Hill, Lil’ Kim held the top spot for five weeks in 2001 with Christina Aguilera, Mya and P!nk on “Lady Marmalade.” Other female rappers such as Iggy Azalea (“Fancy” with Charli XCX) and Shawnna (as a feature for Ludacris’ “Stand Up”) have topped the charts, yet Cardi B is the first to do so without a feature.
It was a race for the win; Swift put forth effort to keep her reign on the charts by reducing the price of her song to $0.69 on iTunes. Unfortunately for the “Shake it Off” singer, Cardi B knocked “Look What You Made Me Do” from the No. 1 spot down to third place after weeks of reigning the charts. Post Malone’s “Rockstar” is currently No. 2.
This “regular degular schmegular girl from the Bronx” later took to Instagram to thank her fans for their support.
“THANK YOU THANK THANK YOU ,I haven’t even showered son with all the running around????I loveee you all each and everybody contributed for this .Ya made it happen for me !!!!! The number 1 WAY!!”
With “Bodak Yellow” hitting the top charts only three months after its release, Billboard hailed it as “the quickest ascent to number 1 by a lead artist’s debut chart entry since Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ shot to the summit in its second frame in 2012.”
Streaming is a major part of the song’s rapid upcoming, with a No. 2 rank for Streaming Songs, as the song hit 36.2 U.S million views for a second week ending Aug. 17.
Since her rise to fame — from a New York City stripper to Instagram celebrity to “bloody shoes” wearing rapper — Cardi doesn’t seem to be fading from the music industry anytime soon. After signing with Atlantic Records in February, her first debut for the company showcases her strong fanbase. Even celebrities acknowledge and support her talents.
Back in June, Taraji P. Henson showed Cardi love on her Instagram page.
