Escape to Margaritaville With This New Jimmy Buffett Musical Set for Broadway

June 10, 20173 min read

Escape to Margaritaville, a musical about American musician Jimmy Buffett who is known for his music reminiscent of island-escapism, is currently in its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California but has announced its Broadway theater and debut dates.

The musical is set for the Marquis Theater on February 16, 2018, with an official opening on March 15. The Marquis’s current show, On Your Feet!, announced a closing date for August 20.

Before it hits Broadway, Escape to Margaritaville is scheduled to play at New Orleans’ Saenger Theater, Houston’s Hobby Center, and the Oriental Theater in Chicago.

Escape to Margaritaville features new as well as well-known songs by Buffett and follows part-time bartender and singer Tully on an island-paradise, where he meets a tourist who’s career-mindedness makes him question his relaxed lifestyle.

Some songs featured include: “Come Monday”, “Volcano”, and “Cheeseburger in Paradise”, as well as many more.

“Welcome to Margaritaville, the island paradise where city folk get away from it all, and the locals get into the kind of trouble you can almost always sweet talk your way out of,” reads a description on the show’s website. “Take a break from your troubles, make some new friends at the bar, and kick back to the soothing sounds of the kettledrum.”

While there has been no casting announcement for Margaritaville’s Broadway engagement, the show currently stars Paul Alexander Nolan (Bright Star, Jesus Christ Superstar), Alison Luff (Les Miserables, Matilda: The Musical), and Lisa Howard (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Priscilla Queen of the Desert) as Tully, Rachel, and Tammy, respectively.

According to the show’s website, Escape to Margaritaville is “more than a musical, it’s a way of life”.

The show’s creative team features a book by Emmy Award-winning Greg Garcia and Emmy Award-nominated Mike O’Malley, choreography by Tony Award nominee Kelly Devine, and Tony Award nominee as well as artistic director of La Jolla Playhouse Christopher Ashley.

“Going to Broadway is a dream come true, but to be coming to the Marquis is like having a great margarita with a tequila floater. If we are going to turn the island of Manhattan into Margaritaville, Times Square seems the perfect place to drop anchor after our voyage from La Jolla, New Orleans, Houston and Chicago,” Buffett said in a statement. “I am grateful to all the wonderful people at all levels who participated in the hard work of turning a dream into reality. It’s going to be a tropical season in New York. Fins Up!!!!”

Tickets for Escape to Margaritaville‘s Broadway engagement are available for groups of 12 or more starting June 5, while tickets for the general public go on sale June 26.
