How Actors Are Breaking Gender Barriers With Fashion Statements at the Golden Globes

January 7, 20194 min read

The 2019 Golden Globe Awards, one of the most significant nights for Hollywood, credited several renowned movies of 2018 and gave blockbusters the praise that they deserve. However, the fashion displayed on the red carpet seemed to have been the main attraction of the night.

Beautiful Boy nominee Timothée Chalamet stunned in an outfit that took viewers’ breath away. Though the actor failed to walk away with an award, he definitely charmed in a Louis Vuitton sparkly harness, which was paired with a black shirt and black pant. It was the harness that surprised countless, the accessory bold and divergent. Louis Vuitton referred to the ensemble as being an “embroidered bib.”

The 23-year-old actor, known for his frequent attempt at breaking gender barriers, has become an extremely significant actor of his generation as a result of both his phenomenal acting skills and his awareness of the world around him. “It’s the craziest feeling to achieve that vulnerability … Humans are complex; we need to feel a lot of things. We are not homogeneous,” said Chalamet in an interview with ID Magazine conducted by singer-songwriter Harry Styles about masculinity.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse star Cody Fern wowed in what might have been the most daring and venturesome outfit of the night. Amazing everyone, Fern stepped out in a sheer pantsuit. Fern paired the sleek collared look with black eyeliner.

In a time when men wearing makeup is becoming more and more frequent, it is simultaneously being questioned by those who have yet to understand the phenomenon. Though Fern is certainly not the first male to apply eyeliner, glitter or any makeup at all, Cody Fern stepping out to a famously known award show while decked out in not only a feminine outfit but with the makeup to match creates a powerful effect. He works to directly break gender barriers, proving that men can rock the look just as well as women can.

Previously, the Golden Globe Awards have been infested by the norm when it comes to men’s fashion — a suit and tie paired with black shoes — aside from the few exceptions every now and then. However, Chalamet and Fern made sure to debunk that manly stereotype both immediately and rather bluntly at this year’s Golden Globe Awards.

The daring outfit choices of the two actors both inspire and let men know that it is, in fact, acceptable to add a touch of femininity to their style. In a society where queer fashion is often looked down upon or questioned, Chalamet and Fern go beyond societal standards and beliefs of how men should dress, fundamentally creating comfort and support within our society.

I think we can all agree without a doubt that Chalamet and Fern wowed in their Golden Globe Award outfits and most certainly stole the show.
