British girl group Little Mix united this year with best-selling female rapper Nicki Minaj in an explosive MTV EMA performance that captivated audiences everywhere. The UK girl group has always been interested in collaborating with the well-known female rapper.
The group is no strangers to female collaborations and has worked with numerous iconic hip-hop females such as Missy Elliott and T-Boz from TLC. Nicki Minaj is the newest addition to their list of hip-hop collaborations — to no surprise, as she is the best-selling female rapper of all time with more than 60 million records sold worldwide. Via Spotify, the girl group has sold over 45 million records worldwide with nine-platinum selling singles, surpassing a previous Spice Girls record.
After 7 long years, the group revealed “Woman Like Me”, a reggae-fusion/dance-hall inspired pop tune that catapulted to the top of the iTunes charts in over 60 countries. The song has already reached the top 3 on the official UK charts and top 40 in over 12 countries. The official music video for the hit single features smashing female stereotypes, a Nicki Mona Lisa-esque portion, and powerful fashion statements – not to mention a viral balancing book challenge.
Nicki Minaj started off the MTV EMA performance with her own song “Good Form” before handing off the lead to Little Mix. The female entourage gave a Janet Jackson filled tribute with crotch-grabbing thrusts and a breathless amount of choreography to match. Ending with the two female acts hitting it off at the center of the stage, the euphoric “Little Mix & Nicki” chants truly gave the moment a girl empowerment feel.
Ahead of the performance, both acts were also grand winners at the 2018 MTV EMA’s. Little Mix received their 3rd win for Best UK & Ireland act – tying them with One Direction for the most wins. Minaj won in both the Best Look and Best Hip-Hop categories.
