The 1975’s “Love It If We Made It” Declares the Scary Truth of Our World Today

October 20, 20185 min read

The 1975 released the catchy single “Love It If We Made It,” toward the end of the summer and it quickly became a hit among fans. Though the song itself includes a tuneful riff that grabs the attention of listeners instantaneously, the lyrics are another story entirely.

In the song, lead singer Matty Healy focuses in on the brutal truth of our world today — something that a lot of people fail to recognize.

As of late, our vicious truth has consisted of sexual assault that has no consequence, police brutality, racism and an obsession with social media.

The song manages to touch on subjects such as immigration, Black Lives Matter, the questionable relationship between President Trump and Kanye West and more.

On October 15, the music video for “Love It If We Made It” was finally released after having been long anticipated by fans. And to say the least, the official music video definitely clears up any confusion anyone might have had about the true meaning of the song.

The video starts out with a multicolor screen in which the band members, Matt Healy, George Daniel, Ross MacDonald and Adam Hann, dance and play their instruments. As the song progresses, the video features quick blips of just about every situation mentioned in the song.

Clips of several police officers holding down a black man, the exchange of firearms, war, explosions and large groups of protesters are just the beginning.

As the song continues and the line, “…a beach of drowning three-year-olds,” plays, the video shows an image of children lying dead on a beach in reference to a family from Syria that fought desperately to make it to Canada, where they hoped they would find protection.

The aforementioned lyrics — as well as the song in general — were questioned at first listen. However, as explanations for the lyrics and the meaning of the song were revealed, some began to think about how it correlated to society today.

The lyrics, “I moved on her like a b***h,” feature an image of President Trump who had said those exact words in 2005, resulting in the anger of countless people. Following that line, “…thank you Kanye, very cool,” comes directly from another Tweet by President Trump himself. With many people criticizing the President for using the social media platform to speak so openly — others may use the term recklessly — The 1975 included this line to show just how  trivial the minds of those who are supposed to be in charge have become. The 1975 alludes to how unimaginable our world is becoming.

The song hones in on all sorts of issues, political and societal alike, ultimately revealing the frightening reality of the world that we live in. Today, just as the song claims, the majority of our population spends most of their time on their cell phones. As a society, we indulge ourselves in social media, our noses constantly tucked into our screens. As a result of our oftentimes oblivious states, we repeatedly fail to see the world as it is happening all around us.

As the song fades out, it continuously repeats, “and I’d love it if we made it,” symbolizing the hope that as a society, we will be able to learn from our mistakes and survive.
