New year, new… music? Obviously, the new year will bring new music, but do we know which type of music? The answer is no. Or not really. However, we can predict which will be the new music trends, or which music trends will remain present in our 2018, based on events, past trends or hits and so on.
With that being said, check out some of the possible music trends for 2018!
K-Pop

Based on the success of bands like BTS, Shinee, EXO, Seventeen, etc. it’s safe to say that K-Pop will still be influential and successful. Furthermore, the band BTS made their U.S. TV debut at the 2017 American Music Awards performing DNA and also became the first Korean act to crack Spotify’s Global Top 50. On Feb. 9, the Winter Olympics start in Pyeongchang, South Korea, which can be something to give more exposure to K-Pop, as well.
Latin Music

After the huge success of Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee (and also a remix with Justin Bieber), many other Latin hit songs followed up — for example Mi Gente by J Balvin and Willy William, and, more recently, Échame La Culpa by Luis Fonsi and Demi Lovato. Many predict we’ll still be hearing a lot of Latin music hits in 2018, so look out for this continued trend!
Football Anthems

The football World Cup begins in Russia, and the official World Cup song is believed to be announced somewhere between April and May, and that’s definitely something to look forward to which will leave its mark on 2018’s music.
EDM

EDM continues to be successful, and with Miami’s Winter Conference in March, we can expect more EDM music for this year! Founded in 1985, Miami’s Winter Conference is held every year in March and is an electronic music conference which brings together music artists, DJs, record label representatives, producers and promoters. Based on their success in 2017, you can expect great music from names such as Steve Aoki, Zedd, Martin Garrix, David Guetta, etc. in 2018.
Women in R&B

Singers such as the Grammy nominated SZA and Solange with her soulful sound have been pushing the genre forward, and it’s no surprise that another music prediction for the new year is more women investing and succeeding in the R&B genre.
As you can see, the expected music trends for 2018 go from EDM to R&B and are pretty much based on the latest hits and upcoming events for this new year. Besides that, you can also deduce some of the tendencies by the the artists releasing new albums, such as Camila Cabello, The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, Charli XCX, Nicki Minaj and more.
